They can be great at performing useful tasks, but working dog breeds can also make terrific puppies and family pets.
According to the Kennel Club, dog ownership has skyrocketed during the pandemic as the lockdown meant people felt more empowered to open their homes to a new puppy.
But with 221 different purebred dog breeds to choose from, there’s a lot of thought to go into choosing your perfect pooch – whether you want a big dog, a family dog or a crossbreed.
The Kennel Club separates breeds into seven different groups, each with a particular set of attributes.
If you are looking for a smart, strong, watchful and alert dog, it is worth looking at working group breeds.
These are the 10 most popular working dogs in the UK, according to Kennel Club registrations in 2020.
1. Boxer
There is no doubt that he is the best dog in the UK when it comes to the working group. The Boxer is a German import that recorded 3,202 registrations last year.

2. Dogue de Bordeaux
The French Dogue de Bordeaux, also known as the Bordeaux Mastiff, is a large, powerful dog that is becoming increasingly popular in the UK. There were 1,500 registrations of the breed last year.

3. Rottweiler
Known for being excellent watchdogs, the Rottweiller can also be a surprisingly gentle and affectionate family dog. There were 2,050 sign-ups in 2020, which puts them second in popularity in the task force.

4. Great Dane
A gentle giant, the Great Dane is one of the largest dogs in the world, but it has a very gentle nature and gets along particularly well with children. A total of 772 were registered at the Kennel Club last year.
